Geography Scavenger Hunt

This geography scavenger hunt is a great creative lesson plan to get kids excited about world geography.  All that you need is a map, globe or atlas of the world per student or group of students with enough detail to answer the questions below.

You can choose to divide the students into groups to complete the educational scavenger hunt activity or you can let them complete the hunt on their own.



Tip: This geography lesson is also a great activity
for homeschool students as well!

Geography Scavenger Hunt Questions:

  • How many continents are there? Name them.

  • How many oceans are there? Name them.

  • What continent has the most countries?

  • Which country has the most time zones?

  • Almost half of South America is occupied by which country?

  • Which European country is shaped like a boot?

  • Where is the Great Barrier Reef located?

  • What is the largest country in the world?

  • What is the deepest body of water in the United States?

  • What is the largest state in the United States?

  • What is the longitude of Melbourne Australia?

  • What is the latitude of Florence Italy?

  • What is the elevation of the highest mountain in Nepal?

  • Which country is landlocked - Niger or Nigeria?

  • Name a city on Antarctica.

  • Where is the Atacama desert located?

  • How many countries are on the continent of Africa?

  • What is the capitol city of Malaysia?

  • What is the name of the longest river in the world? Where is is located?

  • Which country is further east - Spain or Turkey?

  • Over which ocean does the international date line cross?

  • Name five non-neighboring countries that the equator passes through.

  • What is the name of the tallest volcano in Hawai`i?

Ideas to spark additional
geography hunt clues:

Put your thinking cap on and use some of the ideas below to come up with additional scavenger hunt clues for your students that fit with your particular geography lesson plan or theme.

  • Questions about mountain ranges

  • Which country is farther east, west, north or south

  • Questions about countries surrounded by water or landlocked

  • Latitude and longitude questions

  • Capital city questions

  • Geographic features in a country
